research
Spatial Design academics are currently engaged in numerous projects that range between theoretical writing and design practice. Their creative work as research includes architectural designs, building fitouts, exhibitions, installations, theatrical productions and gaming environments. As active contributors to local, national and international aspects of their specialised fields they extend the reach of the program through conference presentations, written publications and performances. As researchers they explore a wide range of topics including: spatial representation and embodiment, spatial and material fabrications, establishing interior design theory, architectural investigations of interior and landscape and New Zealand interior design history; digital environments including the design of interactive virtual spatial environments; performance design including multimedia design, film, installations, theatrical productions and video projects; and exhibition design.
Spatial Design academics at Massey have gained recognition for their design work, including awards and inclusion in international exhibitions, projects and publications. The program is affiliated with IDEA (Interior Architecture and Design Educators Association), DINZ (Designers Institute of New Zealand), DIA (Designers Institute of Australia), and IFI (International Federation of Interior Architects/Designers). Through our research interests in performance we also have links with the Prague Quadrennial (International Exposition on Stage Design and Theatre Architecture) and OISTAT's education commission (International Organisation for Scenographers, Theatre Architects and Technicians). There is also an affiliation with Roskilde University (Denmark) in establishing an international research network in the emerging field of Performance Design.
